Episode 29 - An English Rose
Helen's flight was delayed and her plane wasn't due to land until the very early am. Lee called in sick and drove to the airport. She had promised Jules that she would pick her up and that she would. At the arrival lounge, weary travellers gratefully made their way to their final destinations. Lee stood amongst the crowd of family and friends picking up their loved ones. She saw a tall, leggy blonde whom she recognised from the photos beside Jules' bed. She was even more stunning than her pictures portrayed. Helen's head scanned the crowd and Lee called out her name. Helen turned towards the sound of Lee's voice and Lee waved. Helen smiled and waved back.
She approached Lee with a small amount of hand luggage. Her pants suit was wrinkled from the long hours sitting in her seat and her lightly applied makeup was looking dingy and smudged. Lee thought she was the most exquisite sample of womanhood she had ever seen. She felt the unfamiliar flutter of lovesick butterflies in her stomach. She grinned goofily at Helen.
'Lee, I presume?' Helen said in a devine english accent that Lee thought sounded a tad like Posh Spice. Helen offered her hand and Lee took it, her own was trembling and her palms were sweaty. The English rose leant in and gave Lee a friendly peck on the cheek. Lee caught a wiff of Red Door perfume and she became giddy at the aroma. 'Its a pleasure to finally meet you.'
'Uh huh,' was all Lee could manage. They stood there awkwardly for a few moments until Helen suggested that they get her luggage.
They fought their way through the other travellers for Helen's suitcases. Lee tried to be chivalrous and rescue one. She deftly grabbed the handle as it passed before her on the carousel and was pulled along with it until she let go. Helen giggled, grabbed the other case and plucked it off the conveyor easily.
They talked about the flight on their way to the car park. The sun was rising and its gentle morning hues flattered Helen's face even more. Lee thought she resembled an angel.
'So how is Jules coping?' Helen enquired in that rich foreign accent. Lee was suddenly snapped back to reality at the sound of her friends name,
'Oh, she was really upset that she couldn't meet you. I don't think she would have slept a wink last night she has been that anxious. Her eyes are still bandaged and they are going to remove them this afternoon. They had them full of some ointment and today will be the first time she will be allowed open them.'
Helen's brow furrowed,
'Oh I pray everything will be fine. She has been a good friend to me, Lee. She must be wonderful to live with.' Helen mused. Lee only raised an eyebrow and didn't answer.
They went to the apartment and Helen showered after storing her bags in Jules' bedroom. It gave Lee a moment to process what she was feeling. This devine spark of instant love and affection for her best mate's grrlfriend.
