Episode 53 - Knockin' on Heaven's Door
Lee was sitting on her bed, remembering the night before when she had experienced Helen like no other person before her. She hugged the pillows to her, smelling the seductive scent of the English Rose.
Even though everything had felt so right, her conscience niggled at her about her betrayal of her friend. Lee wasn’t much for infidelity but she struggled to come to terms with how anything as sweet as her and Helen together could make her feel elated and depressed at the same time.
Lee had no idea how she was going to cope with sharing the house with them for three months. She had been surprised at her reaction at seeing them together. For a brief moment she felt like sweeping Helen away and throttling Jules.
She heard a light knocking at the door and ignored it. She was in no mood for company.
Helen stood at the door and waited for Lee to let her in. She knocked several times and there was no answer. Her car was in the driveway so Helen guessed she was visiting someone nearby. She sat on the steps and waited, completely lost and alone.
Midge came out of her apartment to try and get Jez to snap out of her mood. She saw Helen and recognised her,
‘Hi,’ she said, ‘what are you doing sitting out here?’
‘Jules is at the pub and I came home. I thought Lee would be here to let me in but she doesn’t seem to be about.’ Helen explained, her face not hiding her misery.
Midge instantly felt sorry for her. She knew what Jules was like and she had warned her about this whole Net relationship thing. As far as she could tell, neither of them were the love birds they had imagined they would be. Midge looked over the landing and saw Lee’s car.
‘She won’t be far away. Come back to my place and wait. I have to go hunt down a crotchety old bag but I won’t be long. Then we’ll hunt down the crotchety young bag,’ she said, trying to lighten the mood.
Helen was a bit wary but she didn’t seem to have much choice. She felt like an idiot sitting here on the steps.
She thanked Midge and followed her back to her apartment. Midge told her to sit down and relax. She turned on the TV and told her to sit tight and she would be back shortly.
Midge tried Jez’ place again and got no answer. She knew she wasn't far away. Her Harley was in it’s space and she knew Jez would rather have a brain haemorrhage than walk anywhere. She wondered briefly if she and Lee were together somewhere. She tried Lee’s apartment this time and still got no answer. She gave up and went back to see how Helen was doing.
Lee was packing a small bag when she heard the second bout of knocking at her door. Again she ignored whoever it was.
She wrote a brief note to Jules and Helen that she had gone away for a few days to give them some time alone. She thought she may as well seem like a martyr if she was going to abandon her own home and stay with her mother for a while, the latter almost worthy of being cannonised.
Lee locked the door behind her as Midge sat down with Helen for a chat, both wondering where she and Jez were.
