Episode 55 - Be my Valentine
As Lee took off down the road she saw Jules wave at her. She barely lifted her hand off the wheel in response. She just wanted to go somewhere else as fast as possible.
As she cornered the block she felt a thud and the car seemed to lean to one side, ‘Fuckin’ great,’ Lee hissed and got out. Her rear tyre looked like a limp donut.
She dragged her spare out of her trunk. She put it on and lowered the jack. The spare sat as flat as the original,
‘Great,’ she cursed, ‘just fuckin’ brilliant.’
She retrieved her bag and trudged up Carlisle Street. Back to watching Helen swoon with Jules and hating every second of it. Head down, she stomped back to her home.
‘Lee!’ she thought she heard a cry from far away.
She looked up. Helen was standing on the landing and waving to her. Lee’s heart skipped a beat until she saw Jules and Midge on the stairs. She tried to regain her composure but years of wanting to be wanted overcame her.
‘Helen?’ she called back tentitivly.
At the sound of her name the English Rose took off down the stairs like an olympic athlete, shoving past an amazed Jules and Midge. They watched her long legged stride as she ran towards her beloved, her handbag slapping at her side.
Lee dropped her tote bag and began jogging towards her, thinking that this was like a scene out of a bad movie and hoping that it had a happy ending.
They both stopped a few feet from each other. Helen panted and glowered at Lee with desperate eyes. Lee’s heart caved in and she stepped forward and placed her finger under Helen’s chin,
‘Y’know, my Mum said I never could resist English toffee.’ Lee said, thinking of how dumb it sounded but not caring.
Helen raised an eyebrow,
‘All I can think of is a dingo stole my heart!’
Lee started to giggle.
Helen got indiginent,
‘Well its a hell of lot more poetic than toffee!’ she said, crossing her arms. Lee crossed hers as well and they faced off.
Jules’ jaw dropped and she stared wide mouth at the two of them. Midge yelled out from the stairs,
‘Oh for fuck’s sake, just kiss will ya!’
So they did.
